Spring finally arrived in New England just in time for an excellent weekend of racing on Narragansett Bay out of Wickford Yacht Club. It was super to have eleven 505s out for the event, four of which were raced by relatively new teams. HUGE thanks to Mike Breton, Tom Hurwitch and Sol Marini for loaning boats so that new recruits could sail. This generosity is absolutely key to how we will build the class.
Saturday began in a light northerly that shifted around a bit for one race. Around 1:00 the sea breeze filled in at 9-13 knots for two more races. Matt Barry sailing with helm Andrew Sharon led the day with 1,4,1 followed by Peter Scannell/Russ Miller with 3,1,3 and Luke Ingalls and his father John on the wire with 4,3,2. Racing was tight with boats finishing overlapped in a number of cases. Sunday brought a better than forecast SW breeze of 10-15 knots and pretty flat seas. Matt/Andrew continued their domination with 1,1,1,3 making their throw out in the 7 race series that lowly 4th from day 1. Luke and John sailed very well with a 3,2,3,1 to overcome Peter/Russell who closed with 4,3,2,4. See the score box for full results. Probably most important, the whole fleet was sporting smiles after a powered up 3 sail reach back to the harbor.
The next New England event is the Newport Regatta July 6-7. With 9 already boats registered, the hope is to exceed the turnout at Wickford!
