West River Sailing Club and the Bay family hosted the Region II Championship on October 19-20, 2019. Thirteen teams from the American east coast and Toronto accepted the club’s invitation to compete at the mouth of the West River. The race committee ran four races in 8-12 knots on Saturday and one race in 14-18 knots on Sunday. The race on Sunday qualified as a legitimate “east coast” windy race. Several boats rolled in it.
There were a lot of good things about the event. Special thanks to the guys who traveled from Toronto and New England. We appreciate it! RJ Bay, sailing with Barney, is showing some good form. Those guys were leading after Saturday. Had there been no drop, they would have won. Jackson Montague and Nate Barton teamed up in Jackson’s new boat. Ben Komar sailed with Kelsey. Ben is likely hooked. The 5o5 class rewards practice and experience, so give those guys some time. Gabe Watson is back from LA. Thank goodness. He’ll be going fast in six months. The real guy to watch is Alex Tong. That guy can sail. Plus, Curtis and James are back and Sean Harr jumped in Renda’s boat.
RJ and Barney were third; Jesse and Henry were second, and Russell and Macy won.

The only downside was that the few guys who left before the closing ceremony missed out on the great swag from Ronstan. Our rule is you need to be present to get the good stuff. The losers were: Henry, Jesse, Clark, Eric, and Jackson. Don’t make that mistake in the spring.
